Meet Mika

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California (License #MFC35478), and have been working in the field of mental health for over twenty years. My early experiences were working with domestic violence and child abuse in Santa Clara and Alameda counties.

After several years of running my own business teaching natural childbirth preparation and sign language for infants, I returned to my first passion, being a therapist. My interest in working with gifted and 2e issues comes from my experiences being the parent of a 2e child, and the journey I've taken so far.

In addition to my clinical practice, I am a speaker and trainer in topics relating to parenting, giftedness, twice-exceptionality and sensory processing. I am also certified as a SENG model parent group facilitator. Recent topics of presentations include:
  • Parenting the Gifted Child and Parent
for California Association for the Gifted Conference, 2010
  • "Getting" Gifted: Best Practices and Current Research in Helping the Gifted and Twice-Exceptional to Thrive
for Cross Country Education, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina
  • Anxiety, Perfectionism, and Underachievement: Understanding and Helping
for Discovery Charter School, San Jose and Lyceum of Santa Clara Valley
  • Making Sense of the Mosaic: Family Dynamics and Twice-Exceptionality
    for Beyond IQ, Boston, 2009

I enjoy writing, both alone and with my writing partner, Corin Barsily Goodwin, of the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum. Our article list includes:
  • Homeschooling the Twice Exceptional Child: Why 2e does not fit well in the traditional classroom and what to do about it, for the 2e Newsletter
  • Gifted Homeschooling in the US, for the  NAGC Magazine (of the UK)
  • Living with Sensory Sensitivities, for The Homeschool Association of California (HSC) Newsletter, California Home Schoolers
